The Lovely Bones – Alice Sebold

The Lovely BonesThe Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I cannot again appropriately rate it. I need a „I don’t care“ star.

Uhm.. what was bugging me was the fact that the language was so …simple. I mean, a thesaurus would have helped the author (and don’t tell me that the narrator is 14…that is not an excuse.). The story was so simple too but still it was neither a murder mystery, nor a thriller, nor a fairy tale nor a story about grief. Maybe it was the last one the most but there it lacked depth and insight. But it had lots of clichés.

I hate to be harsh, but I start doubting the New York bestseller list. If you want to read about ghosts not leaving you, about the past haunting you, about abuse, murder, mothers whose children never leave them no matter what horrors are attached to them and so much more that all goes with it, I would like to point you to Beloved by Toni Morrison. (In fact I insist that everyone has to read Toni Morrison’s novels right away.)

I think Hollywood turns books into movies when they sell, when they are hyped. Not when they are good (or maybe when they are so easy and cheesy that they are ready to be converted into images). I cannot help but compare The Lovely Bones with The Time Traveler’s Wife because I expected both of them to be great reads and then they turned out to be shallow fiction (but I have to admit that the latter was so worse that I didn’t even attempt to finish it).

So, I was disappointed because the story holds potential, sadly I think the author was not able to live up to it.

And here endeth my review.
